Tezpur University protests hit 79 days, campus shuts down

India

Tezpur University in Assam has come to a halt as student protests against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh stretch into their 79th day.
The unrest began over claims of financial misconduct and Singh's repeated absences.
On Friday, Ministry of Education officials visited campus, but tensions ran high—protesters even blocked them from leaving for hours.

Why does it matter?

Despite a written promise from the ministry to investigate and a move to have Singh step aside from administrative duties during the inquiry, students aren't backing down.
They've declared an indefinite shutdown, putting classes and admin work on pause for about 5,000 students and 400 staff.
End-semester exams set for December 8 were canceled due to the stress caused by the ongoing chaos.
With demands for leadership changes unresolved, normal university life remains on hold.
