Tezpur University students go on hunger strike demanding VC's removal
Tezpur University in Assam has been shut since late November. During the ongoing shutdown, students, teachers, and staff held a nine-hour hunger strike.
They're asking for Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh to step down, accusing him of financial misconduct and deforestation on campus.
Only term-end exams are happening right now, with most university activities paused.
Why does it matter?
Protesters want the Ministry of Education to officially respond and act quickly.
After a ministry visit and a handwritten assurance that Singh would not be allowed to carry out any duty pending inquiry, the community is still pushing for his removal and a proper investigation so things can get back to normal at the university.
An acting VC has stepped in, but regular classes and work remain on hold until trust is restored.
