Thoothukudi boats stranded near Sri Lanka, rescue underway
Two boats from Thoothukudi—a fishing boat with 11 crew and a rescue vessel—ended up stranded near the Sri Lankan border after both suffered mechanical failures.
The fishing boat broke down off Kanniyakumari on June 27, and the rescue team sent to help also got stuck when their own vessel failed.
How the rescue operation unfolded
Strong winds pushed both boats deeper into Sri Lankan waters, turning a tough situation even trickier.
After getting the green light from officials, the Indian Coast Guard reached out to the Sri Lankan Navy for help.
On June 29, both crews were safely rescued and are expected back in Thoothukudi by June 30.
