Top Maoist commander Madvi Hidma killed in Andhra Pradesh
India
Madvi Hidma, one of the most wanted Maoist leaders and a key figure in the CPI (Maoist), was killed by security forces earlier this week in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
He was 51 and linked to over two dozen major attacks, including the deadly 2010 Dantewada attack.
Why does it matter?
Hidma's death is seen as a big setback for the Maoist movement—he had a ₹1 crore bounty and played a major role in cross-state operations.
The encounter also claimed the lives of his wife and four other cadres, following recent arrests of dozens of Maoists across states.
With only four active politburo members left and fewer fighters than ever, security forces hope this marks a turning point against the insurgency.
