UN report flags India's methane emissions at COP30
A new UN report just dropped at COP30, and it calls out India as the third-biggest methane emitter worldwide—mostly because of farming practices like rice cultivation and livestock.
Despite a global pledge to cut methane by 30% by 2030, emissions from key agricultural sources like rice cultivation are projected to rise, making those climate goals tough to hit.
Agriculture is the main culprit—and solutions need support
The report points out that rice fields and livestock are driving most of India's methane output, with agriculture making up 12% of global agricultural methane emissions.
Even more worrying: emissions from rice are projected to rise by 8% between 2020 and 2030.
The UN suggests better water use in rice paddies and smarter manure management but says real change will need strong policies and funding to help farmers make the switch.
