Union Cabinet greenlights big change for higher education

India

The government has just approved the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhikshan Bill, aiming to shake up how colleges and universities (except medical and law) are regulated.
Instead of having three separate bodies—UGC, AICTE, and NCTE—there'll soon be one single regulator to set standards and keep things running smoothly.
It's all about making the system simpler and more focused on quality, following the National Education Policy 2020.

Why should you care?

For students, this could mean potentially less confusing rules across different types of colleges, more accountability, and a bigger push for real learning instead of just ticking boxes.
The bill hopes to fix years of fragmentation in higher education by enabling institutions to focus more on research and quality improvement.
If you're planning college or care about the future of Indian education, this is a pretty important step forward.
