UP: Dispute over mango theft turns fatal

India

A 75-year-old farmer, Sant Bali Yadav, was allegedly beaten to death in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, after confronting a suspected mango thief. The trouble started when Yadav caught Shyamdhar taking mangoes from his orchard. Things seemed to cool off at first, but the next day, as Yadav and his family went to report the theft to the police, they were attacked by Shyamdhar and others.

Investigators are gathering evidence

Yadav died from his injuries in the hospital. His son and grandson were also hurt and are recovering. Police have registered an FIR against Shyamdhar and several unidentified people but haven't made any arrests yet. Investigators are gathering evidence and looking for everyone involved. The case has sparked concern about how quickly small disputes can spiral into serious violence for rural families just trying to protect their crops.
