Weak monsoon with El Nino leaves India's reservoirs 27.5% full
India
India's major reservoirs are running low, only 27.5% full, because this year's monsoon is off to a weak start.
With El Nino in play, rainfall so far is way below average (just 48.5mm instead of the usual 80.6mm).
Central India is feeling it the most, facing a huge 62% drop in rain, which could spell trouble for farmers and crops.
East northeast India 42% rainfall deficit
East and Northeast India are also struggling with a big 42% rain deficit, while South India has seen rains fall short by 21%.
Northwest India is doing better than most, with only a slight dip thanks to some helpful western weather patterns.
Overall, just one in five reservoirs nationwide is even half full, a sharp contrast to last year's levels.
