What's the story

Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Negi has sparked controversy with his remarks about Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut's recent visit to flood-hit areas in the state. Addressing the state assembly, Negi suggested that Ranaut delayed her visit until conditions improved to avoid ruining her makeup. "BJP MP Kangana Ranaut visited the flood-affected areas when everything settled down, as rain would ruin her makeup and people might not recognize her without it," he said.

Context

Why does this story matter?

Ranaut, a native of Himachal Pradesh, visited her home state last month to survey the flood-hit regions. "People have lost everything...in the vastness of that loss, I feel immense pain and grief...our hope is PM Modi," she posted on X. The state is currently grappling with severe weather conditions this monsoon season. Last month, devastating floods and heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh caused extensive damage, resulting in loss of life and the destruction of infrastructure throughout the region.

Publicity accusation

Minister accuses Ranaut of seeking publicity

Negi had earlier accused Ranaut of visiting the state only for publicity. "Kangana ji came here only after the tragedy and when relief work was done and the weather had improved. Remaining in Mumbai, she had tweeted that she would not be able to come here due to a 'red' alert. She came here only for publicity..." Negi had told news agency ANI.

State losses

Minister's statement on state's loss due to floods

According to Negi, the state has faced nearly ₹12,000 crore in losses due to cloudbursts and floods, resulting in significant damage to homes, cow shelters, farmland, and livestock. He explained, "Our National Disaster Response Manual states that for permanent house damage under NDRF and SDRF, the compensation is only ₹1,30,000... Despite limited resources, the Himachal Pradesh government provided a special economic package," he said.
