Virendra Kumar is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and seven-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Madhya Pradesh. In his childhood, Kumar used to assist his father in running a bicycle repair shop in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district. Due to his conviction to pursue higher education, he completed his MA in Economics and PhD in Child Labor from Dr. Hari Singh Gour University. Soon, Kumar came in contact with the Sangh Parivar and served in the RSS, ABVP, and the BJP. He entered the Lok Sabha in 1996 from the Sagar constituency and retained the seat in the 1998, 1999, and 2004 General Elections. In the 2009 elections, Kumar successfully contested from the Tikamgarh constituency and has been re-elected since then in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He served as the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs and Women & Child Development in the Modi Government from 2017 to 2019. When the BJP-led NDA returned to power after the 2019 General Elections, he acted as the pro-tem speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. In 2021, after a Cabinet reshuffle, Kumar was appointed as the Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment.

203 registered cases of children running away from shelters

As many as 203 complaints of children who ran away from observation and special homes have been registered by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) since 2015, MoS WCD Virendra Kumar informed Lok Sabha today.
