What's the story

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are likely to get a major display upgrade. The change, as reported by 9to5Mac citing Korean publication The Elec, could improve battery efficiency and enhance the overall Always-On Display experience. However, the devices will continue to sport the same screen sizes as their predecessors, 6.3-inch for the standard model and 6.9-inch for the Pro Max variant.

Tech upgrade

The new LTPO+ display tech

The iPhone 18 Pro series is likely to ditch regular LTPO OLED panels in favor of advanced LTPO+ panels. The current LTPO tech powers the Always-On Display feature by enabling dynamic refresh rate adjustments. However, the new LTPO+ technology will extend oxide materials to driving thin-film transistors as well, making OLED light emission management more efficient and adaptable based on usage conditions and environmental factors.

Advantages

The new tech will help improve battery life

The shift to LTPO+ display tech is expected to bring two key benefits. First, it will improve power efficiency, which could translate into better battery life for the iPhone 18 Pro during regular use and while using the Always-On Display feature. Second, it will enable more responsive display adjustments in low-light conditions, potentially reducing flickering or graininess that some users experience at lower brightness levels.

Manufacturing partners

Apple has not yet confirmed details

Samsung Display and LG Display are likely to produce most of the iPhone 18 Pro OLED panels. Chinese display maker BOE, however, reportedly failed to get Apple's nod for this year's Pro models due to manufacturing quality and yield issues. As of now, Apple has not officially confirmed any details about the iPhone 18 Pro series.
