ISRO, European Space Agency sign pact on Earth observation missions
What's the story
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has signed a new agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to strengthen their collaboration on Earth observation missions, ISRO announced on Saturday. The pact, titled "ESA-ISRO Arrangement concerning Joint Calibration and Validation Activities and Scientific Studies for Earth Observation Missions," was virtually signed by ISRO Scientific Secretary M Ganesh Pillai and ESA Director for Earth Observation Simonetta Cheli on March 4.
Enhanced collaboration
Agreement builds on decades of partnership
The new agreement builds on the decades-long partnership between ISRO and ESA, which dates back to 1978 and was renewed in 2002. Cheli emphasized the significance of this collaboration for upcoming Earth observation missions, especially ESA's FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer) mission that aims to enhance our understanding of vegetation biology.
Diverse collaboration
Pillai highlights ESA's contribution to India's space missions
Pillai highlighted that the partnership between ISRO and ESA covers a wide range of areas, including Earth observation, navigation, ground station support, and human spaceflight cooperation. He also mentioned ESA's contribution to India's space missions such as Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1, along with their collaboration through ISRO's deep space antenna facilities. The new agreement is expected to facilitate future joint scientific studies and calibration campaigns for upcoming Earth observation missions.
