Pakistan beat South Africa in 1st ODI in Faisalabad: Stats
What's the story
After winning the T20I leg, Pakistan beat South Africa in the 1st ODI of the three-match series at Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium. In the first international at this venue since 2008, the hosts successfully chased down 264. Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha led the charge with half-centuries. Earlier, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed took three wickets each, bowling the Proteas out.
Chase
How Pakistan's chase started
Pakistan had a phenomenal start, with openers Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub adding 87 runs. Although the hosts lost Ayub (39), Zaman (45), and Babar Azam (7) in quick succession, Rizwan held his fort. He took Pakistan toward 200 along with Salman Agha. Just before the 200-run mark, Rizwan fell to Corbin Bosch for 55 off 74 balls. His knock had 6 fours.
Salman
Pakistan get home despite losing wickets
Rizwan's departure didn't affect Salman, who propelled Pakistan past 240 along with Hussain Talat. Although the Proteas inflicted a lower-order collapse with wickets of Talat and Hasan Nawaz, Salman held his nerves. However, he fell to Lungi Ngidi in the 48th over. He slammed 62 off 71 balls (5 fours and 1 six). Pakistan, who were eight down, eventually won in the final over.
Information
Pakistan stumble toward the end
Pakistan were cruising on 196/3 (38th over). However, a concerted bowling effort by SA brought the hosts down to 252/7. With four runs required in the final over, SA managed to uproot a set Hasan Nawaz. However, the over's fourth ball brought the winning run.
Start
De Kock, Pretorius bolster SA
Earlier, SA also had a solid start, with openers Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius adding 98 runs. Debutant Pretorius collected his first ODI run off Shaheen in the opening over. He then smacked Naseem, Shaheen, and Salman for boundaries in the first powerplay. Pretorius, who reached his half-century in the 11th over, slammed a 60-ball 57 (7 fours and 1 six).
De Kock
SA suffer middle-order collapse
De Kock, who continued to attack spinners, reached his half-century in the 20th over. He was joined by Tony de Zorzi following Pretorius's dismissal. The Proteas opener was finally knocked over by Naseem in the 25th over. His 71-ball 63 had 6 fours and 2 sixes. Although skipper Matthew Breetzke and Corbin Bosch scored 40-plus runs, Pakistan perturbed an inexperienced SA middle order.
Comeback
Sixth-most ODI runs for SA
As mentioned, de Kock made a mark playing his first ODI in nearly two years. During his knock, he also became South Africa's sixth-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket. He surpassed Gary Kirsten (6,798) on this list. In 156 ODIs, de Kock has raced to 6,833 runs at an average of 45.85. This was his 31st half-century in the format (21 hundreds).
Stats
