Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo stunned defending champion Casper Ruud in the second round at the Nordea Open on Wednesday. The former beat Ruud 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to secure the first Top 10 win of his career. Cerundolo will lock horns with Aslan Karatsev in the quarter-final of the Nordea Open. The former has reached the quarter-finals in Bastad for the first time.

Cerundolo made his ATP main-draw debut at the 2019 Argentina Open (Buenos Aires). He had received a wildcard for the singles before losing to Guido Pella in three sets. Two years later, the Argentine reached his first ATP final at the 2021 Argentina Open. Although Cerundolo lost the final, he became the first qualifier to reach the Buenos Aires final since Jose Acasuso (2001).

Cerundolo won his first ATP match on hard court at the Miami Masters. He stormed into the semi-finals after Jannik Sinner retired through injury. As a result, the former became the lowest-ranked player to reach the Miami Open semis (103). Cerundolo was also the first man since Jerzy Janowicz in 2012 to reach the semi-finals on their ATP Masters 1000 debut.
