Deepti Sharma enters elite list with all-round show versus England
What's the story
Despite India's narrow four-run defeat against England in the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup, Deepti Sharma has made history with her all-round performance. The 28-year-old cricketer took four wickets and scored a half-century during the match, becoming only the fifth player in the tournament's 52-year history to achieve this rare double. She is also the first player to do so against England in a Women's World Cup match.
Match details
Deepti's all-round brilliance against England
In the match against England, Deepti first broke a massive opening partnership of 73 runs by dismissing Tammy Beaumont (22) and her opening partner Amy Jones (56). She then went on to take two more wickets, finishing with impressive figures of 4-51 in her 10 overs. Later, she scored a quickfire half-century off just 57 balls, but her aggressive shot eventually cost India the match.
Historic achievement
Fifth player in Women's World Cup history to achieve this
Deepti's all-round performance against England has put her in the record books. She is only the fifth player in Women's World Cup history to achieve a four-wicket haul and score a half-century in the same match. The other players who have achieved this rare double are EA Badham, Cri-Zelda Brits, Charlotte Edwards, and Dane van Niekerk.
Past matches
Second player to do it twice in tournament history
Notably, this was the second time in the tournament that Deepti has scored a half-century and taken three or more wickets in a match. She had achieved this double in India's opening match against Sri Lanka, helping her team win by 59 runs. This makes her only the second player ever to do it twice in tournament history, after England's Charlotte Edwards who did it across two editions (1997, 2009).
