What's the story

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed four new global development initiatives at the G20 Leaders's Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The initiatives include a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, an Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, a Global Healthcare Response Team, and an Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus. PM Modi emphasized that these initiatives would help achieve all-round growth and said India's civilizational values can drive progress.

Knowledge preservation

Global traditional knowledge repository to document sustainable living

"Now is the right moment for us to revisit our development parameters and focus on growth that is inclusive and sustainable. India's civilizational values, especially the principle of Integral Humanism, offer a way forward," he said. The proposed Global Traditional Knowledge Repository will document traditional wisdom that showcases sustainable living models. PM Modi said, "India has a rich history in this regard. This will help us pass on our collective wisdom to further good health and well-being."

Capacity building

Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative to create certified trainers

The Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative aims to create one million certified trainers in Africa by the next decade. PM Modi said, "Our collective goal is to train one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade." Modi linked the suggestion to India's long-standing relationship with Africa, saying that it was during India's G20 Presidency that the African Union became a permanent member.

Health initiative

Global healthcare response team proposed for health emergencies

The prime minister also proposed a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team to tackle health emergencies. He said, "We are stronger when we work together in the face of health emergencies and natural disasters." He said the team would consist of trained medical experts from G20 nations who can be rapidly deployed during global crises or natural disasters.

Anti-trafficking effort

Initiative on countering drug-terror nexus to combat trafficking

Lastly, PM Modi also suggested an initiative on countering the drug-terror nexus to tackle drug trafficking and substances like fentanyl. He said, "India proposes a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus. Let us weaken the wretched drug-terror economy!" Modi arrived in Johannesburg on Friday evening to attend the 20th G20 Leaders' Summit. On Saturday, he met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the summit. The theme for the summit is "Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability."
