No petrol-diesel BS-VI cars in Delhi-NCR by 2040? Here's why
To fight Delhi-NCR's severe air pollution, a top government panel wants to gradually ban petrol and diesel vehicles.
The proposal suggests older BS-I to BS-III vehicles go off the roads right away, BS-IV models within five years, and even newer two-wheelers and cars by 2035-2040.
Electric taxis, light goods vehicles (examples: pickup vans and mini-trucks) could also become the norm over the next few years.
Committee recommends only EVs should be registered from 2030
The committee says air in Delhi-NCR is so bad that newborns breathe pollution equal to 10-15 cigarettes a day when AQI is high—pretty alarming.
This move aims to clean up the air by targeting high-pollution vehicles first, offering support for EVs (like charging stations), and recommending that only electric cars be registered from April 2030 and that BS-VI two-wheelers be targeted by 2035 and cars by 2040.
If this goes through, it could seriously change how we get around—and breathe—in the city.
