Stellantis pushes back on EU's 2035 combustion car ban
Stellantis, the company behind brands like Fiat and Chrysler, isn't on board with the EU's plan to ban new gas and diesel cars by 2035.
The broader industry is concerned this could cost a lot of jobs, and they say the rules should be more flexible.
Chairman John Elkann argues that keeping plug-in hybrids and range-extender EVs in the mix could help cut emissions, especially if alternative fuels are used.
Why Stellantis (and others) are concerned
Elkann isn't alone—BMW and Mercedes have warned about severe industry impacts if combustion engines go away too soon.
With EVs making up just 16% of Europe's car market right now, a full switch by 2035 is seen as a big ask.
Still, they're adapting: launching affordable EVs like the Citroen e-C3 to compete with budget-friendly Chinese models already hitting European roads.
