What's the story

Tata Motors has expanded its SUV portfolio by introducing petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari in India. Until now, both models were offered only with diesel engines. The move is aimed at buyers who prefer petrol vehicles due to lower running noise, changing emission norms, and evolving urban usage patterns. The petrol-powered Safari and Harrier take on other popular three-row SUVs such as Mahindra XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar in the Indian market.

New motor

Both SUVs get the new 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine

Both the Harrier and Safari petrol are now powered by Tata's new 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine, makin around 168hp and 280Nm of torque. The engine will be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options. Compared to diesel versions, the petrol models are expected to deliver smoother performance and quieter cabin experience, targeting city-focused buyers and those with lower annual running requirements.

Features

Petrol variants to mirror features of their diesel counterparts

In terms of features, the petrol variants are expected to mirror their diesel counterparts, offering large touchscreens, ADAS features, premium interiors, and multiple drive modes. Pricing details are yet to be officially announced, but industry estimates suggest the petrol Harrier and Safari could be priced slightly lower than equivalent diesel trims. This strategy could help Tata attract first-time SUV buyers and customers upgrading from smaller petrol cars.
