What's the story

The Bengaluru Police have launched an investigation after a 34-year-old West Bengal woman, who was working as a domestic help, accused officers of the Varthur police station of torturing her for hours. The incident took place on October 30 and was reported to authorities on November 2. Whitefield Deputy Commissioner of Police K Parashuram said he has ordered Marathahalli Assistant Commissioner of Police to conduct a detailed probe into the matter.

Allegations detailed

Woman detained after diamond ring went missing

The woman, Sundari Bibi, said the incident took place after she found a ₹100 note at the balcony of her employee's house at Shobha Apartment. She said she picked it up with the intention of handing it over to the house owner. "However, before I could return the note, the owner...came to me, held my hand, and accused me of theft," she said. They later alleged that a diamond ring was also missing and accused her of stealing it.

Husband

Husband, wife assaulted

She was then taken to the police station. From there, she called her husband. Once he arrived, both were allegedly beaten up. In her complaint, she alleged that instead of a lawful inquiry, officers subjected her to severe physical torture. She claimed injuries on her head, back, limbs and private parts due to the assault.

Additional allegations

Husband also beaten up, claims woman

"When I reached the Varthur police station with my husband, 5-6 police personnel tortured us. I was not even allowed to go to the restroom as they assaulted me on my private parts. My husband was beaten when he tried to help me." "I was released only after local activist R. Khalemulla intervened," she said. She also claimed that the officers warned them not to tell anyone about the assault.

She is now being treated at Bowring Hospital, where medical reports have confirmed serious physical trauma. Trinamool Congress MP Samir Ul Islam, who also chairs the West Bengal Migrant Workers's Welfare Board, took up the matter with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's office on Sunday. After his intervention, officials from the CM's office contacted Bibi to check on her condition and ensure her safety.
