Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat is a veterinary doctor, socio-cultural activist, and the sixth Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Bhagwat comes from a Maharashtrian family of RSS workers. He graduated in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and joined the RSS in the 1970s, becoming a pracharak in 1975. In his early years at RSS, Bhagwat worked in Akola, Nagpur, and Vidarbha in Maharashtra. From 1991 to 1999, he was in charge of physical training for the Sangh cadres nationwide. In 2000, he became the Sarkaryvah (General Secretary) of RSS, re-elected in 2003 and again in 2006. The big appointment came in 2009, when the then Sarsanghchalak, KS Sudarshan, handed over his seat to Bhagwat. At 57, Mohan Bhagwat became one of the youngest RSS chiefs, after its founder KB Hedgewar and MS Golwalkar. In 2017, Bhagwat was the first RSS Chief to be officially invited to the Rashtrapati Bhawan by the then President Pranab Mukherjee.
