    In yet another case of honour killing, a pregnant Muslim woman was burnt alive by her own family for marrying a Dalit man in Bijapur, Karnataka. Banu Begum and 24-year-old Sayabanna Konnur were in love and had kept their relationship under wraps as their families would not approve. Police has now arrested her family and her father-in-law.     Bengaluru keeps the hope alive on World Environment Day

    Bengaluru kept the battle alive against mindless urbanization, thereby preserving the environment. The residents of Sarjapur transplanted three giant trees when the officials of PWD came to widen the highway. The trees were transplanted in school premises and have now become a part of students' lives. The school authorities now plan to introduce a program where plant physiology will be taught to students.

    Four years and counting, Ejipura residents await promised houses

    Some 900 families are still waiting for promised houses, ever since the EWS colony in Ejipura was demolished by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in January 2013. 1,512 houses were allotted to residents in 1996, but most of the original inhabitants left due to poor conditions. Since then new residents have moved in. 22 families continue to live on the pavement.

    Child rapist charged with attempt to murder

    A Bengaluru based rag-picker has been booked under attempt to murder to charge who has been accused of brutally raping and assaulting a 5-year old girl. This action was recommended by the expert committee on preventing sexual violence against women and children. Police had arrested the rag picker for kidnapping, attacking and raping the girl who was found unconscious in KG Halli Main Road.

    Karnataka Energy Minister: Power deficit to end in a year

    Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shiva Kumar has said that Karnataka will become self reliant in power by next year. He added that if things work as per plan then it will soon be in a position to supply electricity to other southern-states. The thermal and solar power plants that will be ready for commissioning are NTPC's super-critical thermal power project in Vijayapura's Kudgi.

    Karnataka CM not happy with government's plantation drive

    Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed unhappiness over government's failure in increasing the green cover despite the numerous plantation drive claims. According to him, the state's forest cover is stuck at 19-20% for the last 25 years. The CM commented on World Environment Day celebrations that were organized by the department of forest and environment and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
