What's the story

State Bank of India's (SBI) total business could double to ₹200 lakh crore by 2030, Chairman C S Setty has said. The prediction comes as the bank continues its growth trajectory and is set to celebrate its platinum jubilee in the same year. SBI achieved a major milestone last year when it crossed ₹100 lakh crore in total business for the first time.

Economic correlation

Every 6 years SBI's balance sheet gets doubled: Setty

Setty said that the scale of SBI's business is directly related to the performance of the Indian economy.

He noted that if the economy grows at 7-8%, SBI's balance sheet can grow by 11-12% annually.

"Every six years SBI's balance sheet gets doubled," he said, adding that this growth could potentially lead to a ₹200 lakh crore total business by 2030.

Strategic plan

A look at 'Vision 2030'

SBI has a strategic plan called Vision 2030, which aims to cater to the needs of four key stakeholders - customers, employees, shareholders, and government/regulators.

Setty said the bank is working on meeting these requirements and benchmarking itself against global standards.

For customers, the focus is on improving service; for employees, simplifying processes and creating a satisfying work environment; for shareholders, creating value through efficiency.

SBI's role in mobilizing savings, supporting economic growth

Setty also emphasized SBI's role in mobilizing savings and supporting economic growth through sectors like agriculture, MSMEs, and the rural economy.

He said that as a systemically important institution, SBI wants to be seen as a well-managed entity by regulators.

On a micro level, he stressed the importance of maintaining adequate capital to support credit growth while ensuring stability through economic cycles.
