IEA warns global gas squeeze could create tight 2026-27 winter
Heads up: The International Energy Agency (IEA) says we could be facing a tough winter in 2026-27 because global gas supplies are getting squeezed.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) dropped sharply this year, down by 60 billion cubic meters, which led to a 5% dip in worldwide LNG output.
With winter on the way, that's raising some real concerns about keeping up with energy demand.
Strait of Hormuz could cut LNG
Even though new gas projects are coming online and existing ones are trying to pitch in, they just aren't enough to make up for what's missing from the Gulf.
If disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz continue, the IEA warns we could see a 7% drop in LNG supply by March 2027.
Since this narrow waterway is key for moving gas from the Middle East, any hiccup there can shake up energy prices and supplies around the world.
