India in talks with Rosneft to mine Siberian rare earths
Business
India is in talks with Russian oil giant Rosneft to dig into rare earth deposits in Siberia, a big step for India as it tries to rely less on imported minerals needed for things like electric cars and smartphones.
Announced during the annual India-Russia summit in December, this move is all about boosting India's access to these high-demand resources that power today's tech.
Partners to develop rare earth processing
The deal isn't just about mining: India wants to get better at processing these minerals too.
In May 2026, Russian and Indian companies joined forces to develop new ways of refining rare earths and making powerful magnets used in advanced gadgets and green energy.
The goal: help India build more of its own tech, from EV motors to electronics, right at home.
