India seeks nearly $900 million steel quota in UK trade deal
India is pushing for a nearly $900 million steel export quota in its trade deal with the UK after calling out the U.K.'s new limits as too low.
The Indian steel industry says the quotas, set to start on July 1, 2026, don't match up with what India usually exports and could hurt business.
UK cuts quotas, India threatens retaliation
In 2025-26, India sent nearly $893.4 million worth of iron and steel and their products to the UK part of $13.4 billion in total merchandise exports to the UK
But now, the UK has slashed tariff-free quotas and raised taxes on extra imports above that limit, saying it's worried about too much supply at home.
Indian officials aren't happy and have hinted they might hit back by limiting Scotch whisky imports if things don't change.
Plus, from 2027, new UK carbon rules could make it even tougher for Indian steel to compete.
