India's new labor codes: 4-day work week is here

Business

Big news for working folks—India's updated labor laws now let you finish your week in just four days, with 12-hour shifts (still capped at 48 hours a week).
That means three paid days off if you want, and any extra hours over 12 in a day get you double pay.

What else changes for workers?

The new rules, live from November 21, 2025, combine old laws into four easy codes.
Fixed-term employees now get gratuity after just one year (not only permanent staff anymore) and enjoy the same pay, leave, and social security as everyone else.

Perks for gig workers and women

Gig workers can access portable welfare funds linked to Aadhaar.
All workers over 40 get a free annual health check-up.
Employers must pay wages in a timely manner (for IT/ITES workers, by the seventh day of the month).
Plus, women can choose to work night shifts if they consent and safety measures are in place.
