Microsoft invests $10B in Japan AI infrastructure, Sakura Internet rises
Business
Sakura Internet just got a major boost: Microsoft is investing about $10 billion (¥1.6 trillion) to help grow Japan's AI infrastructure.
The announcement sent Sakura's shares soaring more than 20% on Friday.
Microsoft's plan, set for 2026 through 2029, aims to ramp up AI computing power and cybersecurity in Japan, while also training 1 million engineers and developers by 2030.
Sakura Internet, SoftBank provide Azure backbone
This investment means more local data centers and stronger tech partnerships: Sakura Internet and SoftBank will be providing the backbone for these new AI resources using Microsoft Azure.
While Sakura's stock has had its ups and downs lately, this move could put it back on track as Japan pushes for more homegrown tech innovation.
