Oracle, OpenAI cancel Texas data center expansion
Oracle and OpenAI just called off a planned expansion for their data center near Abilene, Texas.
The project was supposed to boost the massive Stargate facility, but talks broke down over funding and shifting needs from OpenAI.
Stargate project still on track
Even with this setback, the main Stargate project is still moving forward: two buildings are already up and running and are using NVIDIA chips, and the rest are expected to come online later.
The extra capacity planned for Texas will now be fulfilled at another data-center campus.
Meta might lease part of the site
Meta might step in to lease part of the site through Crusoe.
NVIDIA has locked in its chips for Stargate too, choosing not to use AMD's hardware.
Despite all these changes, Oracle says there is no major delay or trouble ahead for the overall project.
