PhonePe's new card makes it easier to use public transport
What's the story
PhonePe has launched a new 'On-The-Go' RuPay NCMC card, as part of India's 'One Nation One Card' initiative. The move is aimed at digitizing public transport payments across the country. The innovative card permits tap-and-pay transactions across NCMC-enabled services, including metros, buses, trains, tolls and parking. It also offers payment capabilities without requiring an internet connection.
Card features
Card can hold a maximum balance of ₹2,000
The 'On-The-Go' card is a prepaid solution that stores value directly on its chip. It can hold a maximum balance of ₹2,000 and allows offline transactions up to ₹500. PhonePe says these cards are issued instantly, making them easily accessible for daily commuters. Initially, they will be available at Hyderabad Metro ticket counters in partnership with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL).
Digital integration
PhonePe aims to integrate digital wallet with public transport systems
Deep Agrawal, PhonePe's Head of Payments, said the new card enables quick 'Tap-and-Pay' transactions across transit providers in India. He stressed that it works offline using the balance present on the card. The launch of this card is a strategic move by PhonePe to enter the transit segment and integrate its digital wallet ecosystem with national public transport systems.
