What's the story

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) has begun the process of forming a selection committee to recommend the next chairman of Tata Sons, as per Moneycontrol. This comes after current Chairman N Chandrasekaran's announcement on August 12 that he would not seek reappointment when his term ends on February 20, 2027. The SDTT holds a 27.98% stake in Tata Sons and has accepted Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek a third term.

Committee details

Selection committee consists of 5 members

The selection committee will play a key role in recommending Chandrasekaran's successor at the helm of Tata Sons, the holding company of the over $180 billion Tata Group.

The committee is made up of five members: three nominated by the Trusts and two by the Tata Sons board.

Both principal Trusts, SDTT and Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), hold around 51.5% of Tata Sons collectively.

Trust challenges

Complications due to SRTT's legal issues

SRTT's participation in the selection committee is crucial, but its inability to hold trustee meetings has complicated the process.

The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has restrained SRTT from holding these meetings amid ongoing proceedings concerning the Trust.

Despite this setback, there are hopes that regulatory restrictions on SRTT will be resolved in time for it to participate before the succession exercise reaches a decisive stage.

Succession timeline

Noel Tata likely to chair the selection committee

Once formed, the selection committee could take about 1.5 to two months to identify a successor.

The group is expected to have enough time for the transition before Chandrasekaran's term ends in 2027, provided procedural hurdles are resolved.

Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata is expected to play an active role in this process, with reports suggesting he may be a member of and chair the selection committee.
