Paramount's $110B acquisition of Warner Bros gets UK nod
What's the story
The UK government has approved Paramount Skydance's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery. The decision was made after the company strengthened its commitments on programming and news provision, which are now legally binding. The regulators found that the merger wouldn't harm competition in major sectors like streaming or TV, avoiding any potential delays.
Editorial separation
Paramount Skydance's promises to maintain editorial independence
To finalize the deal, Paramount has promised that Channel 5's news will remain editorially independent from CNN International and CBS News.
The company also assured that children's TV channels would maintain their unique identities.
These commitments were made to address concerns raised by media minister Lisa Nandy, and would become legally binding commitments for Paramount Skydance.
Regulatory challenges
Deal still on hold in the US
Despite the UK approval, the deal is still on hold due to an antitrust challenge in the US.
This leaves US states, especially California, as the last major regulatory hurdle for Paramount Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery.
The approval from Britain comes after similar approvals from regulators in other countries such as China.
