What's the story

The upcoming war drama Border 2 will feature Akshaye Khanna, Suniel Shetty, and Sudesh Berry reprising their roles from the original Border film, reported Mid-Day. Directed by Anurag Singh, the movie is set to release on January 23, 2026. It stars Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty.

Character details

Khanna, Shetty, and Berry's roles in 'Border 2'

In the original Border film, Khanna played Second Lieutenant Dharamvir Singh Bhakhri, Shetty was Assistant Commandant Bhairon Singh Rathore, and Berry essayed Naib Subedar Mathura Das. Their characters were killed in action, but the actors have been brought back for special cameos. A source told Mid-Day that the inclusion of these characters from the 1997 war drama was a decision made by director Singh and producer-writer Nidhi Dutta to create a memorable experience for audiences.

Plot twist

'Border 2' to feature a unique crossover event

The source further revealed that the characters from both films will meet at an event before the start of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. "It's a great idea as it not only brings the father-son duo of Suniel and Ahan on screen, but also harks back to the much-loved movie," they said.

Production hurdles

'Border 2' production faced challenges, but filming is complete

The original plan was to shoot the sequence earlier this year in Pune, but it didn't happen due to unavailability of combination dates and other logistical issues. However, the actors have since completed their shoots. "In November, Akshaye and Sudesh filmed their portions in Mumbai." The source added that Shetty's scenes were shot against a green screen and will require special effects. "All three actors will be de-aged in keeping with their Border avatars."
