Crowe at Taormina: 2024 'Gladiator' sequel lacked moral core
Entertainment
Russell Crowe isn't happy with the 2024 Gladiator sequel, saying it failed because it lacked the moral core that made the original special.
At the Taormina Film Festival, he shared that studios misunderstood what really connected with audiences, especially women, when they tried to follow up on his 2000 classic.
Crowe opposed 'Gladiator' sex scene
Crowe opened up about pushing back against a studio request for a sex scene in Gladiator, believing it would have taken away from Maximus's emotional journey.
Director Ridley Scott agreed, and Crowe feels this focus on real emotion, and not just action or romance, is why so many people loved the first film.
He thinks ignoring that is where Gladiator II went wrong.
