del Toro warns AI threatens cinema at BFI America dinner
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro is worried about how artificial intelligence is changing movies.
At the BFI America dinner in Hollywood, he was honored for his selection for the prestigious BFI Fellowship but used the moment to say, "We are on the verge of image illiteracy. We are on the verge of cinema illiteracy," warning that AI threatens real, human creativity and our deep connection to art.
del Toro calls AI 'natural stupidity'
Del Toro, famous for Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, compared art to ancient cave paintings, saying its true purpose is to connect and inspire people.
He called AI "natural stupidity" for turning creativity into something artificial and also pointed out that political divides make it even harder for artists to stay free.
His message: let's protect genuine artistic expression from being taken over by tech or commercial interests.
