The incident has prompted the Mumbai Police to register a case against an unidentified person under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The theft took place during Kapoor's trip to New York City for the Met Gala fashion event on April 29, reported IANS. Her entire team, including makeup artist Savleen Singh, who has been with her for seven years, accompanied her on this journey. For the event, two pairs of expensive earrings were rented from Mehta Jewellers and Goenka Jewellers in Mumbai. Singh carried both jewelry boxes in her handbag throughout the trip.

The missing items included emerald-stone diamond gold earrings from Mehta Jewellers worth ₹66 lakh and Zambian emerald-stone gold-bordered earrings from Goenka Jewellers worth ₹69 lakh. The team had started their journey on April 27 at 10:25pm, boarding an Emirates flight from Mumbai to Dubai before heading to New York City. They arrived at John F Kennedy International Airport on April 28 at around 5:30pm, and later checked into The Pierre Hotel in New York City.

FIR filed by Singh at Mumbai's Sahar Police Station
Upon arriving at their hotel room, Singh opened the jewelry boxes to hand over the earrings to a team member named Shireen. To her shock, both boxes were empty. After returning to Mumbai, Singh lodged a complaint at Sahar Police Station, leading to the registration of an FIR under Section 303(2) of the BNS for theft.
