Pirated versions of Popular TV series, unfortunately, are available on a huge scale and the production firm ends up incurring massive losses. What made things worse for HBO, was the fact that season seven of Game of Thrones was not only pirated but several episodes were also leaked prior to their scheduled broadcast dates by hackers. So how damning was the damage?

    HBO is not very happy

A report by anti-piracy firm MUSO notes that Game of Thrones' seventh season has been illegally downloaded or streamed more than 1 billion times. Each of the seven episodes of the season has, on an average, 14.7 billion illegal views till September 3. You can call it a sign of popularity, but HBO must be fuming after knowing this.

It was a good season, we agree

The highly anticipated season premiere was illegally downloaded or streamed more than 90 million times within the first 72 hours of its initial broadcast. For the season finale, the number was 120 million. Since we are talking numbers, out of 1.03 billion piracy instances, 84.66% was done via streaming, 9.12% via torrents and 5.59% via the old-fashioned downloads.

    The scale is massive

Co-founder and CEO of MUSO, Andy Chatterley remarked, "Game of Thrones has become one of the biggest global entertainment phenomena of today and activity across piracy networks has been totally unprecedented."
