2017 Kerala actor rape case: Verdict slated for December 8
What's the story
The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court in Kerala will deliver its verdict in the high-profile actor rape case involving Malayalam film star Dileep on December 8, 2025. The court's decision will conclude one of the longest-running and most sensational criminal trials in the state's history. Dileep was accused of conspiring with NS Sunil, aka 'Pulsar' Suni, who allegedly raped a female actor and recorded the act on video back in 2017.
Delays in trial
Trial proceedings faced multiple disruptions
The trial, which began in 2018, has been marred by several disruptions. The prosecution was halted on two occasions as the victim approached higher courts for the removal of the judicial officer handling her case. Additionally, a COVID-19-induced lockdown delayed proceedings by nearly two years. Further investigation took another year after filmmaker Balachandrakumar alleged he had seen Dileep and others watching visuals of the rape at his Aluva residence. To note, Balachandrakumar passed away in December 2024.
Industry repercussions
Case sparked widespread impact on Malayalam cinema
The case has had a profound impact on the Malayalam film industry, leading to the formation of Women Collective in Cinema, a forum advocating for women's rights in cinema. The collective also called for the Hema Committee report to address issues faced by women in Malayalam cinema. The trial was conducted in-camera and involved around 1,700 documents and 261 witnesses, including prominent actors from the industry.
