Rani Kapur receives ₹21.5L/month, daughter-in-law Priya counters in estate battle
What's the story
The legal dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur's estate has taken a new turn. Priya Sachdev, Kapur's third and current wife, has countered allegations made by her mother-in-law, Rani Kapur. During a recent court hearing at the Delhi High Court, she claimed that Rani continues to draw over ₹21.5 lakh from AIPL, Sona Comstar's holding firm, every month and has her personal expenses paid for as they were when Kapur was alive.
Legal rebuttal
Sachdev's legal team refutes allegations of financial impropriety
Sachdev's lawyer Rajiv Nayar dismissed Rani's allegations that she hid the true extent of Kapur's wealth. He said, "I have filed a detailed list of assets, and every transaction is in the list of assets... No money has been moved abroad." He called the allegation "baseless and reckless."
Salary dispute
Disputed salary and bonus details of Kapur
The court also heard about Rani's claim that Kapur was earning a salary of ₹60 crore, and only ₹1.7 crore was disclosed in his bank accounts. Nayar clarified that for FY24, he received a salary of ₹10 crore and a one-time bonus of ₹50 crore. After TDS deduction, he got ₹36.5 crore in hand, out of which ₹28.5 crore was spent on purchasing immovable assets in London.
Discord denial
Allegations of marital discord and concealment dismissed
Nayar also dismissed allegations of "marital discord" between Sachdev and Kapur. He said these claims were "false, reckless, and deeply insensitive." The lawyer added that every allegation had collapsed under basic scrutiny with bank statements, board resolutions, asset records disproving claims of concealment or wrongdoing. The court was also informed that an email sent three days after Kapur's death originated from Rani's account containing accusatory messages aimed at trustees and staff.
Role transition
Sachdev's resignation and appointment details
The court was informed that Sachdev had voluntarily resigned from AIPL on May 24, 2023. She was simultaneously appointed President of RIPL, another Kapur-owned entity, as part of a promoter-group restructuring. Kapur also resigned from RIPL and transitioned to MD at AIPL as part of the same exercise. Another facet of the legal battle is Kapur's second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor's children, alleging that Sachdev has fabricated their father's will to exclude them from his estate.
