Zeeshan Ayyub reveals why he turns down 'big-star films'
What's the story
Acclaimed Bollywood actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, known for his roles in Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu, has revealed that he purposefully avoided high-profile films to reshape his career. Speaking to Moneycontrol, the actor admitted that he was often overlooked despite delivering powerful performances. This prompted him to rethink his approach and focus on select roles that allowed him more creative control.
Career shift
'I didn't get anything from those films'
Ayyub's decision to avoid big-budget films came after his experiences with projects like Thugs of Hindostan and Zero. He said, "I made a conscious decision, no more big-star films unless the character was strong and the responsibility was mine." "I didn't get anything from those films. I was part of them, but the media and audience ignored my contribution," he said. This dissatisfaction led him to reevaluate his choices and turn down several high-profile offers.
Role selection
'If a story succeeds or fails, I should share credit/blame...'
Ayyub's criteria for selecting roles have changed. "If a story succeeds or fails, I should share the credit or blame. If I'm barely part of the screenplay, I don't want to be there." He admits that this difficult decision slowed his career but helped him establish himself as an actor who values meaningful storytelling over scale.
Digital revolution
OTT platforms helped Ayyub break the 'supporting actor' mold
Ayyub also credits the rise of OTT platforms for helping him break out of the "supporting actor" mold. "The long format of OTT was a blessing. It allowed deeper exploration and helped people trust that I could lead a narrative." His latest project, Real Kashmir Football Club, is set to release on Sony Liv on December 9.
New venture
Ayyub's role in 'Real Kashmir Football Club'
In Real Kashmir Football Club, Ayyub plays Sohail Mir, a character who serves as a manager, coach, and community leader. He emphasized that Mir's role as coach or manager mattered less than his contribution to the story. The series takes a unique approach by highlighting the lives of ordinary Kashmiris, which, Ayyub notes, no other film or series has explored before.
