54 MPs move to impeach judge over VHP event speech

India

A group of 54 Rajya Sabha MPs has moved to impeach Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Yadav, mainly over his controversial speech at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad event last December.
With 50 signatures now verified by the Rajya Sabha secretariat, the notice meets the legal requirement and is waiting for Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar to decide what happens next.

Parliament's effort to hold judges accountable

This is a rare moment where Parliament is stepping in to hold judges accountable, raising big questions about how India handles judicial conduct.
There's also talk about impeaching another judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, over separate cash-related allegations.
Both cases could come up during the Monsoon session starting July 21—right when Parliament will also be tackling issues like President's Rule and Manipur's budget.
For anyone interested in how power works behind the scenes, these moves show just how complicated keeping checks and balances can get.
