82% of Indians with disabilities lack health insurance: Survey

India

A new survey shows that 82% of people with disabilities in India don't have health insurance, and nearly half aren't even aware of the government's main scheme, Ayushman Bharat (AB-PMJAY).

Barriers make coverage tough

Researchers talked to over 5,000 people with different disabilities and found that high costs, lack of awareness, and even gender bias keep many from getting insured.
While AB-PMJAY is the most common scheme among those insured, most still miss out due to lack of awareness or information about the scheme.

What's being done—and what's missing

The government has launched Niramaya Health Insurance for developmental disabilities, covering up to ₹1 lakh a year without excluding pre-existing conditions.
But experts say bigger steps are needed—like making all disabled people eligible for AB-PMJAY and setting fairer premiums.

Why this matters

Advocates are calling for more disability-friendly services so everyone gets equal access to healthcare.
The survey makes it clear: more awareness and better policies could help close these gaps for millions across India.
