After Delhi ATC disruption, AAI sets up dedicated cyber security division

India

After a tech glitch at Delhi's Air Traffic Control on November 6 delayed flight communications and caused delays at northern airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is moving fast to set up its own cyber security division.
The disruption has sparked worries about possible cyber attacks on aviation systems.

Why bother?

This new division will focus on protecting India's airport networks from digital threats.
The recent system failure held up crucial messages—even affecting air defense clearances—so the stakes are high for keeping flights safe and on time.
AAI will also work closely with CERT-In and other government agencies to boost defenses.

Who's leading the charge?

An executive director-level officer will head this new team, making sure strong cybersecurity protocols are in place and coordinating with national experts.
It's a big step as India ramps up efforts to keep critical infrastructure like aviation secure.

What's changing with tech?

To avoid future mess-ups, AAI is replacing its old messaging system (AMSS) with a more advanced one called AMHS—already used by nearly half the world.
This upgrade should make flight communications smoother.
