Heavy rainfall alert for Delhi-NCR, 10 other states today
The monsoon has brought fresh spells of heavy rain over various parts of the country in the last few days. From Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to Uttarakhand, all hill states are witnessing torrential rains. Meanwhile, heavy showers have caused flood-like conditions from Gujarat to Rajasthan. Notably, in Gujarat, seven people have lost their lives due to the flooding. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for Gujarat over the next two days.
Heavy rain alert for Delhi-NCR other states
Similarly, a heavy rain alert has been issued today for several states, including Delhi NCR. According to the IMD, rain is likely in Delhi and the NCR region, with cloudy skies expected throughout the day and the possibility of moderate rainfall. This August, Delhi has experienced 23 days of rain, marking the highest rainfall in the last 14 years. The previous record was 22 days of rain in 2012.
Himachal Pradesh issues yellow alert for two days
Additionally, heavy rains are expected Wednesday in several regions, including parts of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. An orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Thursday across 10 states, including Western Rajasthan, Kerala, and Odisha. The IMD reports that 126 roads have been closed in Himachal Pradesh due to the ongoing heavy rains. In response to the situation, a two-day yellow alert has also been issued.
Weather update for UP and Bihar
In Himachal Pradesh, 41 roads were already closed due to earlier rains, and Tuesday's rainfall has brought an additional 85 roads to a standstill. In the capital, Shimla, traffic has been disrupted by fallen trees on several roads. The state has recorded 591.8 mm of rainfall so far this season. Since the onset of the monsoon, 144 people have lost their lives in the state, with damages exceeding ₹1,217 crore.
More rains expected in Rajasthan
Meanwhile, Rajasthan continues to experience relentless rainfall. The IMD has predicted that heavy rains may continue in Rajasthan for the next two to three days. In the past 24 hours, Western Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Udaipur, Banswara, and Dungarpur, has experienced significant rainfall. On Wednesday, more rain is expected in Bharatpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, and Bikaner. There is also a risk of flooding in areas near the Gujarat border.
IMD warns of potential flooding, road closures
The IMD has warned that the heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, road closures, and waterlogging, especially in urban areas. There is also a risk of landslides and damage to horticultural crops due to inundation in affected regions. The department urged residents to stay informed about changing weather patterns and follow guidelines provided by local authorities to mitigate any risks associated with these extreme weather conditions.
