Anand Dutta is a former police Sub-Inspector who was one of the accused persons in the Kathua gang rape and murder case. The controversial case stirred a massive outrage in the country. In January 2018, an eight-year-old nomadic girl was kidnapped, sedated, starved, and allegedly gang-raped in a small temple in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. The minor girl who belonged to the Bakarwal community was drugged for at least four days. Her body was found by villagers in a mutilated condition. Apart from Dutta, seven other men including a juvenile were involved in the incident. Dutta, along with two others - Surender Verma and Tilak Raj was sentenced to five years of imprisonment for alleged destruction of important evidence. Three other accused persons - Sanji Ram, Parvesh Kumar, and Deepak Khajuria were sentenced to 25 years of life imprisonment. Dutta and seven others were charged under Sections 328, 363, 343, 328, 120B, 302, 376D, and 201 of the Jammu and Kashmir State Ranbir Penal Code for murder, gangrape, and criminal conspiracy.
