Rajasthan: Student gang-raped, forced through abortion, by the director

In yet another shocking incident showing the complete lack of students' safety in schools, it has come to light that an 18-year-old girl was raped by the director and a teacher of her school in Sikar, Rajasthan. She allegedly got pregnant after repeated assaults. They then forced her to undergo an abortion. The matter came to fore when her health deteriorated afterwards.

    What happened?

According to the parents, the director Jagdish Yadav and teacher Jagat Singh Gurjar had been calling the Class XII student over on the pretext of extra classes and raping her since days. When she got pregnant, they took her to a private clinic in Shahpura. Later, she started bleeding excessively. When her parents took her to a hospital, her rape and abortion were discovered.

What are the police doing in the case?

Yadav and Gurjar have been booked for rape and getting abortion done without the woman's consent. Dr Rajnish Sharma, the doctor who performed the abortion, and his wife Kanan were also booked for carrying out the procedure illegally and destroying evidence. Meanwhile, the victim is still unconscious and critical. She has been shifted to a Jaipur hospital. Her statement is yet to be recorded.

Several shocking crimes against students have been reported lately

In 10 days, a seven-year-old was found with his throat slit at a Gurugram school. Then two cases of sexual assault were reported from a Delhi school and a Bengaluru school. Though the HRD Ministry has laid down guidelines to ensure safety of children in schools, not many follow rules. The onus is on schools, parents and the government to improve the dismal scenario.
