Assam-Meghalaya border clash: Nameplate sparks violence in disputed village

India

On Sunday, a fight broke out in Pilingkata village after a nameplate was removed in the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border area.
What started as an argument between women quickly escalated, with groups from both sides getting involved.
Several people were hurt before extra security was called in to calm things down.

Why does it matter?

This clash is another reminder of the long-running border tensions between Assam and Meghalaya—two states with 12 disputed spots along their 884.9-km boundary.
Even though both states signed an agreement in 2022 to settle some areas, places like Pilingkata are still stuck due to disagreements over where the line should be.
Until there's a clear solution, these disputes keep causing trouble for people living on the border.
