Assam: Two arrested after deadly truck crash exposes illegal labor transport
India
Two men, Md Sirajul Ahmed and Sairuddin Ali, were arrested in Assam for illegally moving 22 tea estate workers to a construction site without proper papers or safety.
Their mini-truck crashed into a deep gorge near the China border on December 8, killing most onboard.
Only one worker, Buddheswar Deep, survived—he trekked through the forest for two days to get help.
What's happening now
A Special Investigation Team is looking into charges like human trafficking and culpable homicide as they dig deeper into how these workers were recruited.
By December 14, rescue teams had recovered 20 bodies; six of them have already been cremated back home in Gelapukhuri.
More arrests could follow as the investigation continues.
