Azam Khan cleared in 2017 army remark case
India
Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been found not guilty by a Rampur court in a case accusing him of making insulting comments about the Indian Army during the 2017 UP elections.
After eight years, the court ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict him.
The case was started by BJP leader Akash Saxena (who is now an MLA), but Khan's lawyer called the allegations "baseless and politically motivated."
Still facing legal trouble
Even with this acquittal, Khan isn't off the hook—he's dealing with over 100 other criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh.
He's already been convicted in seven out of 13 cases so far and is currently in jail with his son Abdullah Azam for having two PAN cards each.
Abdullah also faces a conviction for holding two passports.
