Bandra-Amritsar Express AC coaches detach twice within 1hr; probe ordered
What's the story
In a major safety lapse, two air-conditioned coaches of the Bandra Terminus-Amritsar Paschim Express detached twice within an hour on Sunday. The first incident took place at 1:19pm in Maharashtra's Palghar district between Vangaon and Dahanu stations. Railway staff re-coupled the bogies within 25 minutes, and the train resumed its journey at 1:46pm.
Gujarat incident
Coaches detached again at Sanjan station
Minutes later, at 2:10pm, the same two coaches detached again at Sanjan station in Gujarat. Technical teams were immediately pressed into service to address the issue. Western Railway officials confirmed that the faulty two-tier AC coaches, A1 and A2, were replaced with three-tier AC coaches at Valsad station for the safety of passengers.
Safety assurance
No injuries to passengers
A Western Railway spokesperson said, "There was no injury or inconvenience caused to any passenger." However, the train's onward journey was delayed due to the second incident. Further technical checks are being conducted by Western Railway officials to ascertain the cause of these repeated uncoupling incidents.
Refund suggestion
Affected passengers should be offered refunds: Activist
Railway authorities said that they are treating the matter with utmost seriousness, and corrective measures are planned to prevent recurrence. A passenger rights activist has suggested that affected passengers should be offered partial or full refunds due to the inconvenience of shifting from two-tier to three-tier coaches during their journey.
